Ahrenberg, Johann Jacob (1847, Vyborg - 1914), an architect, writer, ethnographer. During 1870-1875 he learned at the Royal Academy of Free Arts in Stockholm. During 1876-1877 and 1879-1882 he was a teacher of Drawing and History of Arts at the Politechnic Institute in Helsinki (now it is the University of Technology). During 1877-1914 Ahrenberg was a civil architect at the Central Administrative Board of Public Building in Helsinki. In 1884 he was the chief of the Gubernia Building Office in Oulu, during 1885-1887 he was an architect of the Vyborg Gubernia. He designed many buildings in different towns of Finland including in Vyborg Town: the Governor's residence (1891; 35 Krepostnaya Street), a Finish Classic College (1892; 10 Pushkin Street), the Gubernia Government Board building (1895; 12 Sovetskaya Street), a Finnish Real College (1896; 9 Sovetskaya Street), a Finnish School for girls (1906; 2 Shkolnaya Street), the general post-office (1914; 14 Sovetskaya Street). Ahrenberg was the author of unrealized projects of the Vyborg Castle and Round Tower restoration. In Keksgolm (Priozersk Town) Ahrenberg built the Orthodox Church of All Saints (1894; 17 Pushkin Street). He studied the folklore and ethnography of Karelian Isthmus and the Northern Ladoga Side, wrote the work "Finnish Pattern" («Finsk ornamentik», 1878-82, in 8 parts), fiction works. Johann Jacob Ahrenberg died in Helsinki.
