TAYTSI, an urban settlement in Gatchina District. Population: 2,600. It is situated at Taytsi railway station of the St. Petersburg-Gatchina Baltiyskaya branch. The settlement was established in 1960. There are also the villages of Bolshiye Taytsi and Maliye Taytsi. The toponym means springs, or “secret” ground waters: the source of the Taytsi (Orlov) springs is in the environs of T. In 1774, a water supply system was built there to supply the ponds of Tsarskoye Selo and Pavlovsk, which worked until 1905. In the 16th and 17th cc., T. had Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and the Church of the Assumption of the Mother of God devastated in the Swedish rule period. The Taytsi Estate was built in the 1770s, with its park depicted in the picture by S. F. Schedrin “A View in the Environs of St. Petersburg” (1779.) In the 2nd half of the 19th century it became a popular dacha area. Composer N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov spent the summers of 1880-81 and 1883-84 in T.; he worked there at the opera “The Snow Maiden”, “Sinfonietta”, Fourth Symphony, and the manual of harmony. Poet B. L. Pasternak was on vacation in T. in 1924. In the 1920s T. was a center of Josephism. The settlement has a leisure center (on its basis the "Pulse" pop band and the " Entourage ensemble exist ), library, and children’s school of music. The "Surprise" dancing company has won several prizes at international competitions. In 2004, a youth center was established, and several sports training sections were opened. The Church of St. Alexis the Metropolitan of Moscow is active.
