Karmalina, Lyubov Ivanovna (1834-1903), an actress

KARMALINA,Lyudmila Ivanovna (born Belenitsyna) (1834 – 1903, Kobrino Village), singer, collector of folk songs. She was brought up at Yekaterininsky Institute in St.Petersburg, where singing was taught by G.Y. Lomakin. She took the piano and singing lessons from A.S. Dargomyzhsky, since 1855 she was taught by M.I. Glinka. Since 1856 she performed as a chamber singer and pianist, toured Russia and Europe. In 1860s Karmalina lived in Volhynia, the Caucasus and Kuban. She collected Russian and Ukrainian folk songs, Caucasian folk songs, schismatic songs, which were later used by A.S. Dargomyzhsky , М.А. Balakirev, А.P. Borodin, М.P. Musorgsky in their works. Since 1880s Karmalina several times visited Balakirev and Lomakin in Gatchina Town. In 1890s she bought an estate in Kobrino Village. There she died and was buried in the cemetery in Voskresenskoye Village near the Resurrection Church.
