KUZNECHNOYE, urban settlement in Priozersk District. Population: 5,200. Located in the north-east of the Karelian Isthmus, at the Lake Ladoga coast, near the borders of the Republic of Karelia and Finland. The name was given in 1948. From 1961, K. was a workers’ settlement (which also comprised the locality of Hakala.) In 1996–2005, it was a separate municipal entity. Since 1917, it has been connected to St. Petersburg and Sortavala with a railroad. K. has grown at the site of development of the Kaarlahti village deposit (Finnish Kaarlahti = “curved bay”), where industrial granite quarrying started in 1945 (4 km away from K. on the Lake Ladoga coast, quarries of the 18th century have been discovered.) In the 1950s, the Kuznechnoye quarry became the largest in the Karelian Isthmus for the granite production. Based in K. are Granit-Kuznechnoye JSC and 458 KNI DOAO (these backbone enterprises are the largest crushed stone makers in the North-Western Region), Vozrozhdeniye Stone Processing Mill LLC, and the Borodinskoye quarry where pink and grey granite is produced (for use in monuments.) K. has two culture centers: Almaz and Yubileiny; two libraries; municipal school of arts (comprising a music and an art school.)
