The Church of St. George the Victorius, Great Martyr (Osmino Village, Luga District)

Subject / Religion. Church/Orthodox churches

The Church of St. George the Victorius, Great Martyr (Osmino Village, Luga District) (Osmino Settlement). The original wooden church was built before 1498 on Osmina Mountain (on the left bank of the Saba River). In 1676 it was built again, in 1700 it was burned. The new wooden church with side-chapels of the Holy Trinity and St. Nicholas was built in the former place during 1700-1709. According to a legend the timber for the church building was apportioned to the order of Peter I. The chetverik of the cut log structure, stretched from the west to the east, was crowned with one dome, side-chapels from the south and north was also crowned with domes, their silhouette was added with the low hipped roof of the belfry over the porch. The church was rebuilt in 1896 (it was boarded and painted). In 1917 it was added to the stone church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God (it was built during 1826-1828, closed in 1933 and it was destroyed). The church was closed on 21 July 1937; it was supposed to demolish the building. Now the uncoordinated reconstruction with distortion of the original image is made.
