Shapki, settlement

Subject / Topography/Villages

SHAPKI, a settlement in Tosno District. Population: 549. Located at Shapki railway station (branch connecting the settlement to Tosno Town.) Located at the Shapki Heights (their shapes remind caps, “shapki”, therefore the name) – kame hills reaching the elevation of 89 m above the sea level. First mentioned in the 1499/1500 scribe roll of Vodskaya Pyatina. In the 17th century it belonged to Sweden; natives of Finland settled there (see Ingermanlandian Finns), and in the 19th c., Estonian farmsteads appeared nearby. In 1774 it became the center of the Jarvisaari Finnish Lutheran parish (appeared in 1638.) In 1846, the wooden St. Jacob’s (St. Jakub’s) church was sanctified (closed in 1938, destroyed in 1944.) The Lutheran graveyard is extant. S. has a church of Protection of the Blessed Virgin (after it, the settlement was also called Pokrovskoye before 1917.) In the 18th c., the Shapki estate appeared; the park built in the 1820s-1830s in the times of landowner A. D. Balashov has survived. North of S., at Lake Dolgoye, there once was the Aleksandrovka estate (currently Nadino village), where composer P. I. Tchaikovsky took a vacation in 1851, and where V. V. Samoilov, actor of the Alexandrine Theater, visited several times. In the 20th c. it became a dacha place. In the 1930s, artist A. A. Rylov and hydrographer N. I. Yevgenov spent their holidays in S. In 1967, a recreational forest was provided in S. (area: 33 ha.) The settlement has a library. Since 1998, the Tartar and Bashkir communities of Tosno District annually celebrate their holiday (sabantui) on the shore o Lake Nesterovskoye near S.
