Voronikhin, Andrey Nikiforovich (1759-1814), an architect

Andrey Nikiforovich Voronikhin (1759–1814), an architect. Till 1785 he was a serf of Count A.S. Stroganov. From 1777 Voronikhin learned in Moscow , his teachers were V.I. Bazhenov and M.F. Kazakov. From 1779 he learned in St. Petersburg, his teacher was F.I. Demertsov. During 1786-1790 A.N. Voronikhin continued further education in Switzerland and France. Then he taught in the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, from 1797 he became an academician, from 1802 he was a professor of the Academy. In 1800 Voronikhin was appointed an architect of the Kazan Cathedral which was his main creation. During 1806-1809 he built the building of the Military School of Mines in Vasilyevsky Island. In the 1790s Voronikhin developed the project of Countess S.V. Stroganova's country palace in the estate of Maryino (the village of Andrianovo, Tosno district). In the 1800s he remade the Gatchina Palace interiors (see the article: the park-and-palace ensemble of Gatchina). During 1803-1805 Voronikhin built the building of an alms-house at the Hospital Town in Gatchina (1, Kirgetov Street). A.N. Voronikhin was buried in the Lazarevskoye cemetery of the Alexander Nevski Monastery (Necropolis of the 18th century) in St. Petersburg.
