Shelgunov, Nikolay Vasilyevich (1824-1891), a forest engineer, critic, publicist. He was educated at the Tsarskoye Selo Alexander Military School, graduated from the St. Petersburg Forestry Institute in 1841. During 1841-1862 Shelgunov served at the Forestry Department of the State Property Ministry, worked as a professor of the Forestry Institute. He is the the author of scientific works on forestry. In the middle of the 1850s Shelgunov became close friends with revolutionary democrats, participated in the underground work, communicated with revolutionary emigration. In spring of 1861 Shelgunov wrote leaflets "Russkim soldatam ot ikh dobrozhelateley poklon" ("Greetings to Russian Soldiers from Their Well-Wishers") and "K molodomy pokoleniyu" ("To the Young Generation"), they were published in London. In Siberia Shelgunov was arrested and in April 1863 he was imprisoned in the Alekseyevsky revelin of the Peter and Paul Fortress. In November 1864 Shelgunov was exiled from St. Petersburg and he returned to St. Petersburg in 1877. Shelgunov worked in magazines "Russkoye slovo" ("The Russian Word"), "Sovremennik" ("The Contemporary"), "Delo" ("The Business"), "Russkaya mysl" ("The Russian Idea") and others. He is the author of the publicistic series "Ocherki russkoy zhizni" ("Essays of the Russian Life"), critcal articles about L.N. Tolsoy, I.S. Turgenev, I.A. Goncharov, F.M. Reshetnikov, A.F. Pisemsky, D.I. Pisarev, memoirs "Iz proshlogo I nastoyashchego" ("From the Past and Present"). In 1884 Shelgunov was arrested again and exiled into the Smolensk Gubernia. He returned into St. Petersburg at the beginning of 1891 not long before his death. The funeral of Shelgunov took place on April 15. 1891 at the Literatorskiye Mostki at the Volkovo cemetery, it turned into the political mass demonstration ("Shelgunov's mass demonstration"). During 1855-1857 Shelgunov worked at the Lisino Forestry (Now - Lisino-Korpus settlement of the Tosno district). A settlement school is located at the house where Shelgunov lived. The estate beloged to the writer's wife Lyudmila Petrovna Shelgunova (Mikhaelis) was located in Podolye village (the Kirovsk district). The married couple visited the estate in 1850 - the early 1860s.
