Toksovo, urban settlement

Subject / Topography/Urban settlements

TOKSOVO, an urban settlement in Vsevolozhsk District. Population: 5,900. In 1920-49, it was a district center (before 1936, the adm. center of a Finnish ethnic district.) The toponym Toksovo (Finnish “Toksova”) is of a Baltic Finnish origin, and possibly originates from tuoksuva = “fragrant.” It was first mentioned in the 1500 scribe roll of Vodskaya Pyatina. The memory of the Swedish wars remains in the names Pontusova Gora (i.e. Pontus Mountain, aka Bald Mountain) and Pontus Log-Road, in honor of the Swedish military leader Pontus de la Gardie whose troops marched from Vyborg to Oreshek in 1581. In the 18th-19th cc., Toksovo’s peasants (mainly Ingermanlandian Finns) belonged to a special category of peasants administered by the Office of the Governor of the Peter and Paul Fortress. In those years, T. was a village of scattered layout. From the late 18th century T. was called “Petersburg’s Switzerland” due to its picturesque position among lakes (of which the most important are Lakes Kavgolovskoye and Hepojarvi) and hills (Toksovo Heights.) In the 19th c., T. was visited by M. I. Glinka, K. P. Bruellow, and A. I. Turgenev. The popularity of T. as a dacha area grew after the opening of a railway in 1917. In the 1920s, writers A. N. Tolstoy and A. S. Grin and poet and translator M. L. Lozinsky used to live there, and in the 1930s, academician D. S. Likhachov. Writer J. Konkka was born in the environs of T. The Lutheran parish in T. has existed since 1625. The stone Lutheran church of St. Peter and St. Paul (arch. K. T. Solovyov, 1887) has survived, and has been active since 1995. T. has a settlement library. “Juhannus”, an Ingermanlandian holiday, was celebrated in T. in 1991 and 2002. In 1995-96, Archangel Michael’s Cathedral was built. Since the 2nd half of the 20th c., T. has been developing as a leisure and sports center (the first ski jump was installed there in 1937.) Currently, T. is a site of skiing events of various levels. In 1974, an open-air cage with wisent-bisons was set up. In 2005, the “Toksovo Is 500 Years Old” memorial sign (by V. V. Gorin) was installed in the “Birch Grove” park.
