PRIOZERSK DISTRICT, municipal entity. Population: 63,300 (of these, 20,500 live in Priozersk town, the adm. center.) Area: 3,563.1 sq. km. Located in the eastern and north-eastern parts of the Karelian Isthmus. It borders Vsevolozhsk and Vyborg Districts, Republic of Karelia, and Finland. Its eastern border coincides with the Lake Ladoga shoreline. It includes the urban settlement of Kuznechnoye, and 103 rural localities. Established in 1944 (Kexholm District before 1948) after some areas of the Karelo-Finnish SSR were included in Leningrad Oblast. P. D. is crossed by the St. Petersburg-Sortavala railroad (built in 1917) and a motor road parallel to it. Inland lakes occupy 12% of the P. D. area. The largest river is the Vuoksa. Forests, primarily pine forests, occupy 63% of the area. Among the natural monuments are Lake Krasnoye (Punnusjärvi), and the integrated reserves Lake Yastrebinoye (Haukkalampi) and Väärämäenselkä Ridge. There have been many archeological finds in the territory of the district, among which are sites of the Neolithic and Early Metal Ages, medieval earth sepulchers, and ritual stone heaps in the vicinity of Lake Sukhodolskoye. At the break of the 1st and 2nd millenniums AD, the Ladoga coast was populated by Karel tribes (see Karels.) In the 14th century, Novgorod fortresses of Tiversky Gorodok and Korela appeared on the sited of earlier settlements. The Orthodox Monastery of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin in Konevets (founded in 1393) became the center of the region’s Christianization. In the 17th century, the religious oppression of the Orthodox Karel population and heavy economic situation in the region made some of the residents flee to Russia; Lutheran Finns settled in the abandoned land. In the course of the Northern War, the area of P. D. became a part of Russia. It was incorporated in St. Petersburg Gubernia, and handed over to Vyborg Gubernia in 1744 (part of the Grand Principality of Finland from 1811.) In the 18th century, lands of the Karelian Isthmus were donated to Russian landowners. The hard lot of peasants in such donation lands is reminded by monuments in the form of natural stone towers installed by architect A. Kaarimo in 1936. In 1842-93, Finland’s first china and faience factory of H. V. Loefstroem operated in Suotniemi village (currently Yarkoye settlement), manufacturing dishware and statuettes from local white clay. Artist A. M. Matveyev and composer E. Melartin were born in the territory of P. D.; sculptor A. Kaasinen, singer of runes Larin Paraske, writers V. A. Lebedev and S. A. Voronin lived there; sciemtists N. Y. Ozeretskovsky and T. Schwindt worked there. In the 2nd half of the 20th century, P. D. became a popular place of leisure. Writers Y. P. German, G. A. Matveev, I. M. Metter, I. S. Sokolov-Mikitov, and actors V. V. Merkuriev and I. O. Gorbachev lived there in their dachas. P. D. (Priozersk town included) has 25 culture centers, 23 libraries (see Priozersk central district library), and four children’s schools of arts and music. The Vuoksa water festival in Losevo settlement and the Karelian art festival are held annually. The "Krasnaya Zvezda” district newspaper is published. Orthodox parishes exist in the settlements of Gromovo, Krasnoozernoye, Melnikovo, Sapernoye, Sosnovo, Plodovoye, Torfyanoye. There is a Lutheran community of the Evangelic Lutheran Church of Ingria in Sevastyanovo settlement on the base of the Lutheran Church of St. John (former Kaukola parish.) Numerous monuments are installed in P. D. on the common graves of warriors who perished in the Soviet-Finnish War and WW2. Since 1992, monuments have been erected on the burial places of Finnish military.
